Welcome to Loni's Life and the first of 4 Blog Hops to celebrate VC Rocks this summer!
This hop features Hostess Gifts and Booking Incentives just in time for the new 2013-14 Idea Book and Catalog launch on June 1st!
Here's a terrific little gift using Stampin' Up! fabric :)
1- You will need 3 pieces of fabric at 4" x 5 3/4" and 2 pieces at 4" x 4"; the SU fabric packages work great because you get 3 coordinating fabrics in one package and you can cut several of these at once (especially if you have a wonderful quilting friend)
2 - You will fold the 4x4 pieces in half (right sides out) and finger press to 2 x 4; you will take the 2 pieces of 4 x 5 3/4 in the coordinating fabrics that are different from the 4x4 pieces and fold in half to 2 x 5 3/4 with the right sides facing out and finger press. (Or if you have a wonderful quilting friend helping you, you can get all fancy and hot press with an iron if you choose)
3. Now you will start your layering; and I will work in a Clockwise order.. Start with the piece 4 x 5 3/4 piece that matched the 2 smaller pieces and lay it with the right side facing up; then take one of the smaller pieces that is 2 x 4 and lay it with the raw edges facing out (away from the center) along the left edge as shown.
4. Next, take one of the larger pieces that you folded in half and lay it with the raw edges facing out; along the top edge as shown.
5. Now take the other small piece and layer it on top along the right hand side; with the raw edges facing out.
6. Take your final large piece; and lay it on top, along the bottom edge, with the raw edges facing out.
7. Now tuck the left edge of that last long piece under the first small piece you laid down. Straight pin your layers and then you will sew.
8. Sew all the way around the edges using a 1/4" seam allowance. Optionally, you can use a zig-zag stitch or a serger to provide a sturdier seam if you prefer.
9. Snip the corners; being sure to stay outside of the stitches.. this is to reduce the bulk in the corners.. because.. the next step is almost magic...
10. From the center, you will then turn your project right side out... use a bone folder or your fingers to gently smooth out the corners pushing from the inside to out. Optionally, you can add buttons or other Big Shot diecut shapes from felt or fleece to further embellish the pouch.
Helpful hint if you are doing these in bulk for a class or Teacher Appreciation gifts; you can stack your 3 fat quarters on top of one another and do the cutting at once;starting with 4 inch strips (You can get 12 out of the 3-pack of Stampin' Up! large fat quarters. It does help a bit if you have a Quilter in the family or a friend that is a Quilter... but be fairly warned, that Quilting hobby can become as addictive as your stamping or scrapbooking hobby... but Stampin' Up! has a nice variety of Designer Fabrics with which you can explore fabric art!
You can see another tutorial by the terrific Tisha Copland here and a pdf with pics of cutting in bulk from Stamping with Gail here
Happy Sewing!!
